Dear Spelman Community,

I write today to share news regarding the shooting that
took place in the Atlanta University Center at the beginning of the school year, which left two Spelman College students and two Clark Atlanta University students injured.

We learned recently that a second arrest has been made. According to the Atlanta Police Department, the alleged shooter has been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct. The first suspect was arrested at the beginning of September
on similar charges. More information can be found via the APD announcement.

As we approach a celebratory week of Homecoming events and Spelman's Healthcare Summit: Multidimensional Perspectives on Healthcare in the 21st Century, safety remains our number one priority.

At the end of September, our students led an extremely productive and informative town hall about safety with all of the chiefs of the Atlanta University Center police departments, as well as Spelman and AUC administrators. On October 2, the College tested Spelman Alert, our emergency notification system, for which we shared new policies and protocols in a letter I sent in late August. If you did not receive the notification, please be sure to enroll in Spelman Alert.

As you enjoy the Homecoming festivities around the AUC and beyond, we encourage you to use caution and be aware of the level of security at off-campus events, should you and your friends decide to attend.

In service,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President, Spelman College
