Dear Spelman Community,

Last night, Spelman students gathered for our festive annual late night snack to mark the beginning of exams. While members of our Student Affairs staff, led by Dr. Darryl Holloman, served breakfast, we received news of gunshots on the streets outside of the Spelman gates. The College's surveillance cameras revealed that shots were fired outside of the gates on Westview Drive.

Our security protocols proceeded with the circulation of an alert to the community via Spelman Alert, the arrival of Spelman Public Safety and the Atlanta Police Department, and the launch of an investigation.

Blessedly, no one was harmed. Spelman Public Safety
will increase patrols to the immediate exterior of the campus from Westview Drive to Spelman Lane and Greensferry Avenue for the rest of the semester.

Starting today, a Spelman Public Safety officer will be stationed in the Beverly Daniel Tatum Suites guard station, nearest to Westview Drive, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. as a permanent safety precaution.

Sincerely,
Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President, Spelman College
