Dear Spelman Community,

Thank you for joining us for our eighth President’s Town Hall on Tuesday night. We had an audience of more than 1650 students, parents, faculty, staff and alumnae, and collected more than 500 questions during the course of the evening!

We are grateful for the high level of engagement from the Spelman community. Let me respond now to some of the frequently asked questions.

COVID-19 Testing for Spelman Employees
All Spelman employees who plan to access campus on or after Monday, August 3, will need proof of a negative test. Through July 22, 2020, tests are available for employees at Morehouse School of Medicine via Color Genomics. Every employee should have received a memorandum from Spelman’s Office of Human Resources notifying them of the imminent mailing of testing instructions. By now, those instructions for COVID-19 testing from Color Genomics should have arrived in your inbox. Employees have the option to submit negative COVID-19 tests from other providers meeting criteria that will be shared in the Mandatory COVID-19 Testing Policy in the next few days.

Teleworking Guidelines for Spelman Employees
In the coming days, employees will also receive a note from Human Resources regarding the College’s teleworking policy for the fall. There will be a series of workshops designed to help staff understand the College’s teleworking policies. In consultation and with approval from your supervisor, we encourage the choice of a work option that both safeguards your health and ensures that the essential work of the College continues.

Student Housing Stipend

This week, students will receive information from the Division of Business & Financial Affairs that includes clear guidelines regarding a modest one-time support stipend for students who signed a lease in Atlanta on or before July 1, 2020, in anticipation of being on campus this fall.

COVID-19 Testing for Incoming Students
Details of COVID-19 testing for incoming students will be delivered in the coming weeks, along with updates about New Student Orientation.

Online Instruction for Non-Residential Students

Our Division of Academic Affairs will be in touch with students next week to provide guidance on how to prepare for online instruction and members of the Student Success Center will be available to provide guidance on virtual advising, counseling and study groups. In the meantime, students who have questions specific to their major are encouraged to reach out to their department chairs.

We thank all of the members of the Spelman community for remaining so engaged with the College during these challenging times. We value the feedback we are receiving from students, faculty, staff, alumnae and parents, as we cross this bridge over troubled waters together.

Let me also thank our Senior Team members and the co-chairs of the Task Force on Spelman College Academic Year 2020-2021 for their participation in the town halls. Your contribution to the town halls and your extraordinary work in the development of the plan are much appreciated.

A special thanks to our Spelman Student Government Association for composing such a lively summary of the College’s plan for the fall and for organizing the responses to the plan in advance of the town hall. As always, many thanks for the guidance and wisdom of the Spelman College Board of Trustees.

Onward,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
