Dear Spelman community,

This year, on the occasion of the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, activists across the nation are participating in a hunger strike to protest the proliferation of voter suppression laws.

I am joining them. In the event that you would like to join in the hunger strike protesting voter suppression laws, I write now to share that the mass protest will take place at least one day leading up to MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 17.

Our country fought hard for voting rights, desegregation, and equal opportunity. Ordinary people, Black and white, old and young, and of many faiths fought with bus boycotts, freedom rides, lunch counter, sit-ins, marches, registration drives and more. And now, we find ourselves fighting again against a rising storm of resistance battering against the levee of our rights.

We cannot let the levees break.

Keep the faith,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
